5 places people print most — and why they matter

Some places are obvious. Some are tiny streets nobody else has heard of. These are the five kinds of place that make the best map posters, and what they usually mean to the people who choose them.

1. The city where you fell in love

Paris, Rome, Lisbon, or Galway on a wet weekend. It's rarely about the city's looks. Something happened there: a first trip together, a proposal, a week that changed things. The city matters less than what it holds.

2. Your hometown

The place you grew up never quite leaves you, even when you do. Plenty of people want their hometown on the wall precisely because they don't live there any more. It usually ends up in a bedroom or a study.

3. The place you got the news

A hospital. A park. A bench on a particular corner. Sometimes the place isn't glamorous at all. It's just where something life-changing happened, and the map is a way of marking it.

4. The new address

A housewarming gift, the first home together, the flat where everything started over. Maps of a new address are about beginnings: this is where we landed.

5. The holiday you can't stop thinking about

The town in Tuscany. The beach in Kerry. The neighbourhood in Lisbon where you had the best dinner of your life. A map of it keeps it real.
